Nuria McGrath, 25

Driven by compassion and ambition to the healthcare field, Nuria McGrath rose quickly to a senior position at one of Westchester’s top-rated nursing facilities. As director of admissions and case management at the Dumont Center, she’s responsible for helping the senior community access short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. McGrath, who reports directly to the facility’s top administrator, connects with hospital social workers and patients’ families to clear patients for admission to the 196-bed facility and works directly with insurance companies to ensure that residents can procure and maintain coverage for their stays.

She’s also part of a team effort to ensure that short-term patients’ needs are safely met before they’re discharged from Dumont. For McGrath, the primary rewards of the job are “hearing people’s stories and learning from their life experiences,” and seeing seniors rejoin their communities following rehabilitation.

Although she didn’t expect it, McGrath intends to keep working in geriatrics. “Healthcare was always my dream field,” she says. “I didn’t know where I’d land, but I’m happy where I ended up.” Future plans include pursuing an MBA in healthcare management, but for now, the close-knit Dumont Center community is where she feels at home. “Focusing local was key to finding a job I love,” says McGrath, a lifelong New Rochelle resident and Iona College graduate. “I’m glad I could stay local and give back to the community that raised me and did so much for me.”
