Regaining a sensational smile

Q. My smile has become unattractive with age. How can I get the beautiful smile I always had or wanted?

“If you’re concerned about unsightly gaps between your teeth, teeth that are worn down, or the color of your teeth that have darkened with age, a smile makeover not only addresses all of these issues, but can make you look 15 years younger. Using a range of techniques from bleaching to porcelain veneers, we create beautiful and natural-looking smiles. Before any work is done, a photograph is taken and revised to reveal how your new smile will look. Once you love the look of trial veneers, the porcelain veneers are created, and you leave with the smile you’ve always wanted. We also share our approach to esthetics with other dentists through the classes we teach and our articles and chapters on cosmetic dentistry.”

Maintaining a healthy weight

Q. How do I avoid my usual winter holiday weight gain?

“Here are 10 tips for enjoying the season without packing on pounds:

1. Eat before you party.

2. Bring a healthy dish.

3. Find healthy holiday foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

4. Exercise regularly.

5. Wear form-fitting clothes. (Without realizing it you’re more likely to overeat wearing loose clothing.)

6. Use small plates.

7. Practice portion control. Fill half of your plate with vegetables and the other half with proteins and healthy starches.

8. Avoid high caloric drinks.

9. Take a holiday walk after parties or large dinners.

10. Resist constant grazing by socializing away from the central food location.”

Lengthening lashes

Q. Are eyelash extensions safe for my natural lashes long term?

“Yes, wearing lash extensions is perfectly safe if applied and maintained correctly. It’s important to go to a reputable studio when considering eyelash extensions. All of our Lash Artists are licensed estheticians. They are trained, very knowledgeable, and have gone through Deka Lash’s vigorous certification process. The health of your natural lashes is our top priority. We first assess your natural lashes to determine the type of extensions that will work best for you. Then we customize the look based on your personal make-up style and desired outcome. We also have a uniquely formulated, extension friendly, product line, which includes a serum to help strengthen the natural lash and a make-up remover to keep the extensions clean and free of damaging bacteria. With proper aftercare, you can continue with all of your normal activity including working out and even swimming.”

Restore and revive

Q: What are the most effective ways to keep your face and skin looking youthful and natural?

“Achieving youthful skin is an easy task with the proper tools and professional guidance. Aging is inevitable, but aging gracefully can be simple with clean and hydrated skin. Regular facials, a medical-grade skincare regime, and being diligent about drinking water can make all the difference. Furthermore, the conservative use of Botox and fillers can slow the aging process by years! It is important to begin using Botox to prevent irreversible lines and wrinkles, along with fillers for replenishing facial volume loss. For skin that needs a little extra love or has been untreated until now, regular IPL facials and radio frequency skin tightening is the most effective way to “re:fresh” yourself!”

Restoring a smile with precision

Q. How has the emerging integration of technology affected your implant practice?

“Determining the best position for a dental implant is driven by the ideal placement of the tooth. The addition of an intraoral scanner, coupled with our low-radiation cone beam CT scan, have allowed us to diagnose and plan our implants better than has been possible in the past. We can create computer-generated guides in our office on one of our 3D dental printers to help ensure the implants are placed in the areas we planned with minimal surgery and maximum accuracy.”

Lighten hair with minimal damage

Q. How can I lighten my hair to a beautiful blonde while conserving my healthy look?

“Bleaching is an oxidation process that lifts the original hair color to lighten your hair. But, this process penetrates the cuticle and degrades existing hair pigments, removing original color from the strands. The bleaching process also causes the hair color to change gradually, and depending on your natural color, may go through many stages of brown, red, orange, and yellow before reaching a white blonde shade. Unfortunately, not only do bleaching agents affect the color molecules in your hair, but they also weaken protein bonds, making the hair brittle and more fragile. However, lifting cream offers another option that does not make the hair dry by gently lifting the hair and taking longer to reach lighter levels. These hair lifting sessions help conserve the hair’s natural oils and keep its natural shine.”
