The Hospital’s founder Dr. H. Ernest Schmid in 1911.
In 1893, twenty-two women and three men came together with a purpose- to create a new vision of medical care for their community. From its humble start as a four-room building with physicians making house calls on horseback, to the present day, White Plains Hospital has always reflected its founders’ commitment to exceptional, comprehensive and compassionate care.

In 2018, White Plains Hospital celebrates its 125th anniversary. A microsite dedicated to the anniversary, wph125.org, includes a historical timeline and a “125 Moments of White Plains Hospital” in which members of the public are invited to share their White Plains Hospital story by clicking on the “Share Your Story” icon.
Through the decades, the Hospital has been a leader, constantly evolving to meet changes in medical practice and the needs of the burgeoning communities it serves. The years have been distinguished by unparalleled growth in services and structures, bold new technologies, and major advances in research and treatments. Today, the most substantial campus transformation in the Hospital’s history has resulted in a sophisticated, modern and state-of-the-art facility – one that truly represents the outstanding care given within its walls.
Recent strategic partnerships have strengthened the Hospital’s physician base and its ability to provide the community with a seamless coordination of advanced care throughout Westchester. From Bronxville to Mount Kisco, residents now have access to some of the most sophisticated health services and specialists in the New York metropolitan area, close to their homes and without the need to travel. Recognized time and again by numerous outside organizations, the Hospital has earned multiple awards and distinctions, including the prestigious Magnet® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), widely considered the gold standard of nursing excellence, in both 2012 and 2016.
