All of us at Zachys believe that the more you know about our family, our company, and our passionate pursuit of elevating local food and wine culture, the more you will enjoy our products and services every day of the week. We are delighted to be partnering with Westchester Magazine on the Wine and Food Weekend this June, and have been busy pulling out all the stops (and corks) in preparation for the spectacular four-day marathon of food and wine events.
In 1944, when my wife’s grandfather “Zachy” Zacharia founded East Parkway Liquors across from the Scarsdale train station, the business was primarily focused on selling spirits to a growing number of customers. In 1961, my father-in-law, Don Zacharia, purchased the company from his father and proceeded to build up the wine segment of the store, starting with products from the Bordeaux region of France. Don traveled widely in Europe with Sam Aaron of Sherry Lehmann fame, and soon Zachys became a wine mecca for enthusiasts throughout Westchester County.
Fortuitously, momentum at Zachys continued to build. We were garnering national recognition, and always looking for new ways to bring quality wines to the store. Don’s son, Jeff, came on board, and he helped to continue to grow producer relationships, both domestically and abroad. We added wines from Germany, Rhone Valley, Spain, and many more from regions of France, including a wide selection of Champagne. And, in 1993, when I joined Zachys as a business partner, it became my goal to push out to bigger wine regions, particularly in Italy. Today Zachys is one of the preeminent retailers of fine Italian wines, selling an average of 25,000 cases of Italian wine annually.
Zachys’ multi-generational business is devoted to promoting the connection between great food and high quality wines and spirits—we think it’s a natural! Also, the interest in biodynamic farming and sustainable practices is massive. Not only do they make for a healthier planet, they also make for better wines, and Zachys selection of delicious organic wines tops the 20 percent mark. Look for tastes of Fetzer’s rich, jammy California wines at Burger & Beer Bash!
Our loyal customers and friends know that we are continually looking for ways to “take Zachys out of Zachys,” and bring our message of fine wining and dining into the community where the culture can be enjoyed and refined. For us, the timing was perfect for an alliance with Westchester Magazine’s Wine & Food Weekend. We cordially invite you to partake of all this event has to offer, learn more about what we do at Zachys, meet our incredible staff, and, above all, make a toast to good living. Cheers!
All the best!
