Black Friday. You know that particular day of the year, after we gather as a family to give thanks for everything we have, where people savagely trample their fellow humans to capitalize on those super sweet, can’t-miss holiday deals?
Oh, you don’t want to have to fight through a sea of elbows just to buy your son a gift? Let me introduce you to Small Business Saturday. Yeah, nobody gets hurt on Small Business Saturday.
But seriously, what started out as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday madness back in Massachusetts’ Roslindale Village six years ago has exploded into a nationwide statement of support for local mom-and-pop shops. According to Forbes, more than 95 million shoppers went out on Small Business Saturday of last year, and they spent close to $16.2 billion. Even the POTUS himself hopped on the trend, giving the day and Upshur Street Books in Washington a well-received shout out.
