Breaking the Mold for Gourmet Food Markets
Westchester County’s foodies have been raving about Tarry Lodge in Port Chester since food-world celebrities chef Mario Batali and restaurateur Joe Bastianich opened the gourmet, Italian restaurant in 2008. So when a storefront around the corner became available two years later, Batali and Bastianich opened Tarry Market, believing that the same people who enjoy great food while dining out would jump at the chance to buy great food in a unique Manhattan-style shopping environment.
“We’ve been having a great year and are still evolving in many ways,” Manager Morgan Pruitt says. Tarry Market offers an espresso bar and a vending machine for free wine tastes, with plans for a rooftop garden that will provide fresh produce during the growing season. It also provides hand-carved meats from the butcher and a back-of-the-store bakery, but what really breaks the mold is the fact that Tarry Market has its own executive chef, Chris Juliano, whose kitchen makes fresh pasta and cooks up dishes from Mario’s cookbook.
