It’s official: after discussions on Tuesday and Wednesday, the County Board of Legislators approved an agreement with the federal government, which will bring about the creation of affordable housing units in white neighborhoods and make them available to nonwhites. The agreement was passed with a vote of 12 to 5, and was referred to as “perhaps the most important one to be made in the history of the county’s legislature,” by Board Chairman William J. Ryan
Based on the terms of the agreement, the county will spend $51.6 million—$30 million of which will come from Westchester, and the remainder coming from Washington over seven years—to build 750 homes predominently white and affluent towns, for families earning up to $53,000 for renters and $75,000 for homeowners.
