Westchester Wedding Guide From the Pros for 2012: Local Wedding Vendors Share Trends and Favorites for Creative and Memorable Wedding Details

The Little Things

Sometimes, wedding creativity comes out in the most unexpected places, and it’s a table number, decorative element, or even a mistake that sticks with you when the event is long over. We asked our vendors for the most memorable wedding details they’ve come across at recent weddings.

“My bride loved birds—that was her theme. For escort cards, the bride found poles that resembled telephone poles. We strung monofilament from one to the other and we attached the place cards with tiny clothespins. We placed some silk birds sitting atop the poles. It looked fabulous!”
—Alice Norwick, Petals by Alice

“I have a metal tree made by a blacksmith that I rent out for the escort table. It stands five feet tall and I place it in the middle of a round table. Branches are inserted into the top of the structure and the cards are tied to ribbon and are hung in alphabetical order around the tree. The trunk of the structure is decorated in flowers. It really make a statement when you enter the room.”

“I shot a wedding last year where the groom wore shoes with flames. It put a smile on everyone’s face.”
—Chris Ware, Chris Ware Photography

“At a recent wedding, the mother of the bride hand-stitched every guest’s name on a dinner napkin, which then became the place cards for the table. This type of detail really adds a personal touch.”
—David Bowen, Bowen & Company

“Fabric treatments and lights can really change the look of a room. A bride had requested fabric to cover the entire perimeter of a room with twenty-five-foot-high ceilings, and up-lights were used to add a soft pink ‘wash’ to the material…absolutely breathtaking.”
—Dean Andreades, Forever in Bloom

“Once, I saw a chuppah made completely out of icy blue rock candy.”
—Jay Muse, Lulu Cake Boutique

“It may be old-fashioned, but the wedding party of one of our couples completely decorated their car and surprised them when they exited the church. It was absolutely adorable and made for some really memorable photos.”

“I had a couple who could not bring their dog to the wedding, so every time their dog would be sleeping or chilling out, they would place a number by him and take a picture. These were placed in gorgeous frames and became the table numbers.”
—Lauren Sozmen, Loli Events

“Rob from Entertainment & Sounds Unlimited and his video team put together a same-day edit for one of my brides, which showcased the entire day’s events, almost like a beautiful music video. Guests could watch the bride and groom repeat their vows from the ceremony set to music on his plasma TVs while they finished dinner.”
—Maria Solazzo, Impressive Invites

“There was a butterfly-themed wedding, and the plan was that, after the last dance, the bride and groom were going to release a big box of butterflies outside. The flower girl was running around during the wedding and knocked over the box indoors. There were butterflies everywhere. The photographer snapped some unbelievable pictures with everyone dancing and butterflies fluttering all around. It was an unplanned situation that turned into a romantic photo opportunity.”
—Mike Allan, Extreme Music Productions

“The most touching detail I remember—that was actually planned by the groom—was a surprise firework display on the dock at Coveleigh Country Club, where all the guests were invited outside to watch as the groom kissed his bride outside the canopy they got married under just hours earlier.”
