Copland House nabbed the (arguably) most-sought-after chef in the metropolitan area for its sixth annual gala and, as has come to be expected by its appreciative guests, threw another enormously triumphant event. This time, it took place in Harlem. Marcus Samuelsson, the man behind the wildly successful Red Rooster restaurant on Lenox and 125th Street, cooked a four-course meal for the evening, dubbed Dreaming on Lenox, which was served at Red Rooster. (Just try to get a reservation at the restaurant. Good luck!) One of the courses, braised short ribs and strip loin, was what Samuelsson served President Obama and his wife when they visited the restaurant. Copland House’s Executive Director Michael Boriskin declared, “You won’t come away hungry tonight. We have a full menu of food and music.” And what music. Baritone James Martin belted out Fats Waller’s “The Joint Is Jumpin’” and violinist Harumi Rhodes performed a few Aaron Copland works. As for dessert—caramelized white chocolate cake—Samuelsson quipped, “When you think about diversity, what can be more diverse than white chocolate?”
