Westchester Food Lover’s Guide: Desserts

Bar Cookie
Salt and sweet fans take note: The monstrous Saw Mill River Bar at Flour & Sun Bakery is for you. Layers of buttery Club crackers upon layers of homemade caramel and peanut-butter chips, topped with chocolate and Maldon Sea Salt Flakes. Avoid motor-vehicle operation after consuming until the wonderful sweet stupor blows over.

Donut
Popular with the cyclist set, Gypsy Donuts of Nyack, New York, are not your cakey sugar-bomb dessert donuts but instead less sweet, springy varieties baked daily that are more suited for breakfast. The best part—not a hint of grease. Another bonus: they serave the Queen Mother of Coffee: Stumptown. Donut flavors change often but look for maple bacon, salted caramel, triple berry jam, and cannoli-cream-filled. And while there are no guarantees in life, if a location were to open in Westchester, there might be a Best Of selection in Gypsy’s future. Just saying.

Cheesecake
Cheescakes come in all flavors (pumpkin, fruit-topped, marble) and styles (Pennsylvania Dutch made with farmer’s cheese, Italian with ricotta), but for the cheesecake purest, simplest is best. And Harrison Bakeshop’s unassertively lemony version sans crust is creamy without being too rich and light enough to have a second piece and not go into a sugar coma.

Scone
The Scone Lady, aka Liz Larkin, has many “sconers,” or devotees of her moist, flaky, and a bit cakey cream scones (she forgoes buttermilk and instead uses heavy cream) that are sold primarily at Scotts Corners Farmers and Bakers Market 11 am to 4 pm every Sunday, April through October. The regular flavors are blueberry, chocolate chip, cranberry orange, and “cinnful” (cinnamon streusel), but she’ll occasionally make specialty varieties like peach, zucchini currant, pumpkin, or fig rosemary orange.

Sconer Watch: Can’t make it to that far-off Westchester land called Pound Ridge (it’s where Scott Corners is located)? Larkin also drops off several dozen at Erica’s Kitchen in Bedford Village and Frannie’s Goodie Shop in Mount Kisco.

Black-and-White Cookie
Simply made with flour, sugar, zero-trans-fat shortening, milk, and eggs, the spongy shortbread New York deli classic from Kingston, New York-based Meredith’s Bread is a simply fabulous rendition. Eat at room temperature for best flavor (note the hint of lemon). Get one (or six!) at one of the County’s many farmers’ markets, including Hastings, Muscoot Farm, Ossining, New Rochelle, Rye, Tarrytown, and White Plains.
