Branch out and plant a tree
The next deadline for helping the Bedford Garden Club with its goal to plant 2,020 trees by 2020 is fast approaching. As part of its continued centennial celebration, the Bedford Garden Club launched Branch Out! Planting Trees for Bedford’s Next Generation to preserve Bedford’s historic character and replace the hundreds of trees lost to storms, age, and removal. Individuals and community groups can apply for Branch Out! trees in three easy steps: 1) Pick a location where you would like to plant and keep it in mind when you pick a tree. 2) Pick a tree from the eight natural species available. 3) Complete the application and send it in with your check before the September 1 deadline for planting in October. The seven- to eight-foot Branch Out! trees come in 15-gallon containers and are sold at a savings of about 50 percent off retail prices. Pick up and plant your tree yourself or, if you’re not the DIY type, have it delivered for an additional $20 per tree and planted for $40 per tree. Among the many benefits to Bedford residents: tree-lined streets are believed to be safer and increase property values.
