Westchester Children on Horseback: Chicory Meadow Farm and Pegasus Therapeutic Riding

These two spots in Cortlandt Manor and Pleasantville offer standard lessons as well as those for children with special needs

Chicory Meadow Farm
Cortlandt Manor, (914) 737-7814; chicorymeadowfarm.com
You don’t have to go to the Wild, Wild West to learn to ride a horse. Chicory offers children’s lessons that will teach your child to walk, trot, and, eventually, jump horses. Its Young Equestrian Program teaches students from 6 to 11 years old everything from grooming and tacking to riding.

Pegasus Therapeutic Riding
Pleasantville (845) 669-8235; pegasustr.org
Pegasus, headquartered in Brewster, New York, provides programs for children with special needs, as well as at-risk individuals including disadvantaged youth and survivors of abuse and human trafficking. Its therapeutic horse-riding program can benefit those with special needs in a variety of ways—improving mobility, balance, posture, coordination, language development, and behavioral control and concentration. Pegasus also offers kids with special needs the chance to participate in non-riding activities, including equine learning and barn education program, as part of its Horses & Me program.
