New Rochelle resident Roy Johnson, the editor-in-chief of Men’s Fitness, always makes time to work out, even if it means a hotel room. Johnson recommends these five essentials for at-home or on-the-road exercising.
1) Jump rope. “For great cardio, there is little that is better, whether it’s for short bursts or long periods of time.” |
2) Swiss ball. “You can get a great core workout with it—not just your abs, but balance, and upper- and lower-body strength. For starters, get a medium-sized ball because it’s harder to stay balanced on a big one.” |

3) Medicine ball. “People think of medicine balls as old-school,” Johnson says. “But today, medicine balls are an essential part of almost every gym workout. I’d recommend a ball that’s eight to ten pounds. You can use the ball while you’re doing sit-ups and other ab work. You can do Russian twists and use it while doing lunges. The medicine ball helps you get a great all-body workout.” |
4) Perfect Pushups. “Everybody should have a set of Perfect Pushups (perfectpushup.com). They’re a couple discs with handles on them that allow your hands to rotate as you go down in your pushup. They keep your wrists from experiencing all of that pressure in the down position. That rotation also engages more muscles in your arms and shoulders. A lot of trainers and celebs swear by the pushup because it works.” |
5) Resistance bands. “There’s one particular brand, called TNT Cables, available at monkeybargym.com. With these bands, you can do biceps, triceps, a back workout, a chest workout. You can throw them in your bag and travel with them.” |
