You may know Pleasantville resident Al Bernstein for his 35 years on the air on New York radio (most recently, he can be heard on Hudson Valley’s own WHUD 100.7 FM), but you probably don’t know that Bernstein is a classic-car aficionado whose sparkling white 1956 Jaguar Mark 1 is a familiar site in town. Here are his top five dream cars.
1) 1956 Jaguar Mark 1. “I consider it a family heirloom,” he says. |
2) 1951 Studebaker Commander. “I always loved the styling, with the nose-cone front and ‘suicide doors.’ My dad had a silver-gray one, and I still remember riding in it.” |
3) 1952 Dodge Coronet. “My mom had one—big, chair-high seats, a split windshield, and a gyromatic transmission. You could drive it as a clutch or an automatic. I saw one for sale recently, maroon with a tan convertible top in splendid shape. Made my mouth water!” |
4) 1972 MGB. “I’ve always loved English cars and owned one I bought from a college professor of mine—British racing green with a convertible top, thirty MPG, and lots of fun. My wife, Jane, and I went all over the Northeast in that thing, carrying both skis and ten-speed bikes on the back of the trunk. One morning in Stowe, Vermont, the temperature was fourteen below. Our friends had a Mercedes and they laughed and said, ‘You’re not gonna be able to start that English toy in this weather.’ Guess who went skiing and who didn’t? The good old manual choke did the trick!” - Partner Content -

5) 1965 Pontiac Le Mans. “This was John DeLorean’s design for GM. I loved that car. Why can’t they make cars like that anymore?” |
