Pound Ridge Elementary School students. Inspired by a fellow student diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, students at Pound Ridge Elementary School decided to raise money via a coin drive to support cancer research. In three weeks, they raised $9,788.54 and donated the money to the White Plains-based chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Dr. Laurie Hess. The Bedford Hills-based veterinarian was featured on two episodes of Animal Planet’s Pets 101 series on “Peculiar Pets” and “Little Pets.”
Yonkers bibliophiles. The city’s 2011 budget has provided for its libraries to re-open on Saturdays, after closing them in 2010 as an austerity measure.
Students at Our Lady of Victory Academy. Beset by budget woes, the 65-year-old school in Dobbs Ferry will shut its doors at the end of the current school year—forcing current students to find new schools ASAP. It had operated in the red for the past three years while attempting a turnaround.
Charles Winitch. After years of investigation, the 51-year-old Scarsdale financial advisor will face more than five years in prison after admitting to defrauding accounts for disabled children.
Tarrytown. An investigation by the New York State Department of Labor concluded that the village was at fault for the deaths last year of two village employees in a manhole.
