WINNERS
– Claire Knaplund. The Concordia nursing student won the National Gerontological Nursing Association Undergraduate Student Leadership Award.
– Pets Alive Westchester. The Elmsford-based no-kill animal shelter (petsalivewest.org) is offering low-cost veterinary services for pet owners unable to afford spaying/neutering and vaccinations for their animals.
– Ossining High School. The school received Intel’s Star Innovator Award, which recognizes the high school with the best science and math program in the nation. The school will receive a $20,000 cash grant, plus other prizes from the Intel Foundation
LOSERS
– Yonkers Police Department. The YPD lost a false arrest civil suit when a federal jury awarded $5,500 to a man who claimed he was assaulted by officers at the Cross County Shopping Center, where he was attempting to pick up his girlfriend after work.
– Jose Piedra. The Sleepy Hollow resident pleaded guilty to a felony charge of unlawful surveillance after he was busted by police for using his cellphone to take photos and videos underneath women’s skirts at the Target at City Center in White Plains. Piedra faces up to three years in prison and must register as a sex offender.
– New Rochelle Residents. A special panel appointed by the city council has recommended cutting back on fire and police protection levels to help close a budget gap, though it still projects the need for a 2.4 percent property tax hike.
