Winners

Kevin Puts. The Yonkers resident won the Pulitzer Prize for music for his first opera, “Silent Night: Opera in Two Acts,” about the Christmas cease-fire during World War I.

Yonkers students. The city school district’s new proposed budget is the first one in five years to not include any teacher layoffs.

Jack. The six-year-old pit bull who was rescued from a dog fighting ring in Yonkers six months ago, has been nursed back to health and led the 2.5 mile pet and family walk at the annual SPCA Walkathon and Pet Fair in Yorktown.

Losers

Cross-Hudson commuters. The federal government rejected New York State’s request for a $2 billion loan to finance the replacement bridge for the Tappan Zee.

Donna Rubino. The director of patient accounts at Four Winds Hospital in Cross River was arrested for stealing more than $40,000 from the psychiatric facility through falsifying records.

Westchester residents who breathe. Both Westchester and Putnam counties scored failing grades in the American Lung Association’s annual State of the Air report, for their exceedingly high ozone levels.
