This Month's Winners and Losers: December 2012

–    The Hackley School—The private K-12 school in Tarrytown recently inherited an original Monet painting (Nympheas, 1905) from the estate of one of its biggest benefactors. Christie’s estimates the painting will sell for $30 to $50 million at an upcoming auction.
–    Hale Gurland and Richard Sherryl. The two pilots walked away with no injuries from the crash of their helicopter on Kitchawan Farm in Yorktown Heights.
–    Metro-North commuters. The MTA has added 79 additional trains to its schedule, to beef up its off-peak and weekend service on the Harlem and New Haven lines. The additional trains are part of an effort by the MTA to increase its frequency of service to at least every 30 minutes.
–    Robin Cooke, Bernie Miller, Ed Petrie, and Bernie Williams. The Croton-Harmon High volleyball coach, Rye High wrestling coach, Rye Neck High baseball and basketball player, and the former Yankee, respectively, are the 2012 inductees into the Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame.

–    William Moody, DDS. The White Plains dentist, who became an unwitting Internet sensation in 2009 when a video of him assaulting a woman over a parking spot went viral online, agreed to a $9.8 million malpractice settlement with an ex-patient over a botched extraction.
–    Roy Saretsky. The 51-year-old Yonkers man was arrested for assaulting an Ardsley police officer who was arresting him for punching a woman in the face at a house party.
–    Tom Land. The Purdys resident allegedly fled the scene of a car accident in Ossining after his Jaguar rear-ended another vehicle, only to fall down a ravine and be rescued by a retired NYPD detective who heard his faint cries for help.
–    Westchester County employees. County Executive Rob Astorino has threatened as many as 800 layoffs to offset an $86 million gap in next year’s budget. Astorino attributed the gap to the rising costs of pensions and other benefits.
