Jim Tilley has a PhD in physics from Harvard, was an insurance actuary for eight years and a researcher/banker/chief information officer/advisory director at Morgan Stanley for 24. And now he can add published poet to his already impressive resume. His first book, In Confidence (Red Hen Press), debuted in late January. Not just any published poet, mind you (in the decade since he retired, 40 of his poems have been published in top-tier literary journals), but one who is getting raves from Somers resident Billy Collins, former poet laureate of the United States and acknowledged rock star of the poetry world.
“Jim Tilley does confide in his readers here as he explores a refreshing variety of subjects,” Collins says, “everything from the complexity of father-son and husband-wife relations to the more solvable problems of dark matter and the origins of the cosmos. But what wins our confidence is not his range, but his steady hand on the poem and his steady gaze at the world.”
