The Three Pillars of Men’s Fashiom

Don’t know a hemline from a Hemsworth? Have no fear. We asked local style guru and Male Call fashion-blog creator Lois Fenton for a set of guidelines to help absolutely any guy craft a unique and on-trend look of his own.

1. Color

“A person can spend thousands of dollars buying clothes, but if he doesn’t have a good sense of color, he won’t look nearly as good as a bargain shopper who understands how to put garments together,” explains Fenton. “If a man is wearing, let’s say, a blue shirt with a gray suit, then those are the two primary colors in his outfit, and the rule is to repeat colors. So, if he’s looking for a tie, he should be looking for one that has those colors. He would repeat the basic color in the shirt — maybe he’d have a light-blue shirt — then he could have a charcoal-gray tie with a little blue pattern in it pulling everything together. It would look as though he had planned it, rather than he just reached into the dark of his closet and pulled out whatever he touched.”

2. Cut

“The thing I find most wrong when it comes to cut is usually in the trousers,” shares Fenton. “They’re baggy, and they’re too full and too long. Instead of just having a small break, they puddle between the knee and the bottom. Men seem to feel that when they buy something to wear, it should just automatically fit them. Now, there is nothing wrong with buying clothes off the rack — I don’t believe that it’s necessary to have things custom-made — but I do think it’s necessary to have every detail that should be altered, alteredDon’t say, ‘Well, it’s close enough.’ If a pair of trousers needs to be shortened an inch or a couple of inches, have them shortened to the correct length.”

3. Coordination

“Men should dress appropriately for their industries and appropriately for their personalities. If you’re dealing with a serious subject, such as somebody’s money, you should look like you’re somewhat conservative and serious. You don’t have to be dull, but you shouldn’t try to be too offbeat,” notes Fenton. “You should own khaki pants, a brown belt, some form of a brown shoe that’s not too dressy, and any number of long-sleeved, collared shirts in any number of patterns, from the simplest solid color, such as powder blue or white, to a tiny traditional pattern, such as a small stripe, tattersall, or a very small plaid. Also, if you are in a very casual situation, you could wear a knit polo shirt, but it has to be in very good condition. And if you have a shirt that can be ironed, it should be ironed, because a well-ironed shirt just screams good grooming.”

Groom of One’s Own

Owner of The Fine Men’s Salon of Westchester, Carmela Kinnally, waxes wise on what grooming products make for the best skin and hair a man can get.

Baxter Almond Facial Scrub

“Men do not spend enough time on their skin! This scrub is rich yet powerful; it sloughs off dead skin while cleansing. I also recommend this prior to shaving. Use a small amount daily, and your skin will thank you. The result is a face that is glowing, healthy, and ready for a photo shoot.”

Reuzel Hair Tonic

“This is a light-hold, easy-to-use product for men who do not like to use product or want something that is not complicated. This tonic is a liquid, and a little goes a long way. It accentuates your waves, curls, and controls frizz, not to mention the clean, understated scent is just amazing. I love to spray it around the salon.”

Baxter Cleansing Bars

“These are a must for every shower. They come in five clean and long-lasting scents; they lather luxuriously and never break apart in the shower. My all-time favorite is the Vitamin Cleansing Bar, which has a touch of citrus. Your skin will thank you, and so will your significant other.”

Reuzel Tea Tree Shampoo

“I am in love with this shampoo. Its calming, clean, and natural scent makes it a shampoo that can be used daily. Tea tree is an ingredient that is used in many of our products here at The Fine Men’s Salon — from beard balms and shaving creams to shampoo and conditioners.”
