BUCHANAN—Indian Point nuclear power plant has begun implementing a host of new safety and security upgrades mandated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in response to the nuclear catastrophe at the TEPCO plant in Fukushima, Japan.
TARRYTOWN—From a barge floating offshore, workers drove a handful of test pilings into the Hudson’s riverbed, in preparation for the construction of the replacement bridge for the Tappan Zee. The test pilings will be used to gauge strength and stability, in order to determine the numbers and positioning of the actual pilings used. Similar tests were planned for the Rockland side of the river.
CORTLANDT—A 20-year-old man died in a one-car accident along the same stretch of road on Croton Avenue where, in 2008, he had helped rescue two girls from a similar fate when their car overturned in an accident.
RYE—Residents approved a bond for more than $16 million to fund the construction of new science labs at the high school. The bond was approved by a vote of 1,842 to 1,048, after a similar measure for a $20 million bond was rejected last year.
MAMARONECK—A motorist driving down the Hutch spotted an injured wild turkey and stopped to rescue it. The 15-pound turkey was taken to a veterinary clinic in Pelham, where it was treated with fluids, antibiotics, and pain medication. It’s believed the turkey hit its head on a windshield when it flew across the parkway. Once recuperated, the turkey will be transferred to a wildlife sanctuary.
