The Hot Seat

The Spirit House Chair designed by architect Daniel Libeskind

Constructed of 14-gauge stainless steel and weighing a hefty 180 pounds, the Spirit House Chair isn’t just available from the Royal Ontario Museum, it was inspired by it. The geometric gem—manufactured by Nienkämper and priced at $12,000—was influenced by the angles of Daniel Libeskind’s design for the museum’s new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal addition. The first piece of commercial furniture designed by the celebrated architect (the mastermind behind the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site), the Spirit House Chair can be used in five different positions or as a side table. Each piece takes some 40 hours to complete and features the engraved signature of Daniel Libeskind on the top.
