In 1954, a Yonkers landmark was born. After more than two years of construction, the Cross County Shopping Center came to fruition, becoming Westchester’s first outdoor retail destination. After its opening ceremony, attended by legends such as Jackie Robinson and actress Martha Raye, the center was an instant hit for shoppers and diners alike, and remains so 60 years later. The pedestrian mall has evolved a bit in those six decades, though, especially after a $250-million renovation and expansion project in 2011.
