AM Pit Stops
Where to grab your coffee and carb of choice on your morning commute
Equus at Castle on the Hudson
400 Benedict Ave
(914) 631-1980; castleonthehudson.com
“There’s something glamorous about a white-tablecloth breakfast, where coffee is poured from silver urns and juice arrives in stemmed crystal,” says Westchester Magazine’s award-winning food writer Julia Sexton. “For a little while, anyway, as you munch your toast, you can pretend that you’re breakfasting in the rooms of your own ancestral estate. Sadly—always too soon!—the bill will come.”
Coffee Labs Roasters
7 Main St (914) 332-1479
Patrons adore this place for its great coffee—which is roasted on premises—and friendly atmosphere. “Coffee Labs Roasters is the county’s favorite independent coffee stop,” declares Sexton, “slinging fabulous brews in a cozy, welcoming spot. Congratulate yourself for working so close to it—we know tons of people who drive miles for this experience.”
Best One-Hour Lunch Spots
When fast food simply won’t do
Blue Hill Café at Stone Barns
630 Bedford Rd, Pocantico Hills (914) 366-9600
“It’s a shame that more Tarrytown workers don’t take a couple of minutes to drive around the lake,” says Sexton. “Blue Hill Café serves fabulous sandwiches, salads, soups, cookies, and pastries—all at reasonable prices—and all emanating from Blue Hill’s famous kitchen, using Stone Barns’ ingredients. In good weather, lunch breakers can eat overlooking a pretty brook—it’ll feel like a day in the country, and all on your lunch hour.”
Silver Tips Tea Room
3 N Broadway
(914) 332-8515; silvertipstea.com
Though primarily a teashop for customers that know their leaves (and are willing to pay for them!), Silver tips is also a tearoom serving filling sandwiches and dense, creamy scones. Sexton suggests pairing them with a pot of Rooibos, Oolong, or Pu-ehr, and you’ll find a civilized little respite from the rigors of the office.
Swagat
19 N Broadway
(914) 332-5544
Swagat is a small, modest restaurant serving Halal Indian cuisine, which only means that the food respects Muslim dietary laws, explains Sexton. “Aside from Halal meats, which are slaughtered with specific rituals, you’ll find lots of vegetarian options, plus Swagat does take-out.”

PM Pit Stops
Where to grab dinner-to-go after work when the kitchen@home is “closed.”
Lefteris Gyro
1 N Broadway
(914) 524-9687; lefterisgyro.com
“Holding down Tarrytown’s busiest corner is Westchester’s go-to Greek takeout, Lefteris, where the gyros are soft, hearty, juicy, and indescribably delicious,” says Sexton. “Lefteris’s Greek salads are suspiciously addictive, too…heroin? crack? crystal meth? Whatever…it’s effective.”
Chiboust
14 Main St
(914) 703-6550; chiboust.com
“Chef Jill Rose’s cozy little boite serves almost any purpose,” Sexton says. “It’s perfect for a quick drink, a few small plates, a long, leisurely dinner, or take-out. In fact, you can also grab coffee and pastry up front in the bakery, and Rose also does catering for on-site office parties, so you don’t even need to leave your desk.”
Sweet Grass Grill
24 Main St
(914) 631-0000; sweetgrassgrill.com
“Though recent staff changes have knocked Sweetgrass around a bit,” Sexton says, “we love owner David Starkey’s commitment to fresh, locally-sourced ingredients—and we’re charmed by Sweetgrass’s oddball interior, which includes the uncovered façade of a 19th-century house.”
Caravela
53 N Broadway (914) 631-1863
“Caravela is great for a quiet, low-key dinner, with its gracious, old-school service, heavy napery, and muted music,” Sexton says. “Sometimes I find old-fashioned restaurants like this a relief after all those blaring sound systems and twitchy, iPhone-checking hipster waiters.”
Where to Play Hooky
Shhh! We won’t tell if you won’t.
Weather-permitting, enjoy the trails of Tarrytown Lakes South County Park for a nice walk or bike ride. With its magnificent views of the Hudson, a trip to Sunnyside, the historic home of Washington Irving, is a must for any history buff. Or take a guided tour through the breathtaking grounds of Lyndhurst Castle, a work of art and history.
Where to Celebrate That Promotion
Equus at Castle on the Hudson
400 Benedict Ave
(914) 631-1980; castleonthehudson.com
“At Equus, you’ll find no Edison bulbs, no water walls, and no open kitchen—just an elegant, historic estate with views to forever,” Sexton says. “Chef David Haviland’s cuisine focuses on the Hudson Valley, with a stress on elegant game dishes. We always feel like lords of the manor when we go.”
Tarrytown’s Best-Kept Secret (Not Anymore!)
✔ Pierson Park on the Hudson River waterfront is the perfect place to savor an outdoor lunch with a view, watch boats head in and out of the harbor, catch a spectacular sunset, or even enjoy some live music on a summer evening. The park—which is accessible via West Main Street adjacent to the Hudson Harbor development—is currently being reconfigured by the village as part of a $2.4 million renovation that will add more green space, picnic areas, and a performance pavilion to the existing amenities.
And BTW…
✔ Due to all the castle-style mansions that litter its skyline, Tarrytown used to be
referred to as “Millionaire’s Colony.”
✔ The fate of the Revolutionary War was perhaps greatly altered when three
Tarrytown militiamen caught Major John Andre, who was carrying the plans for the fortification of West Point, given to him by Benedict Arnold.
✔ Artists including Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen have performed at the
Tarrytown Music Hall and more than 50 recordings have been made there.
