Summer Fun in Westchester: Golf

No, with the price of gas what it is, we don’t mean getting in your gas-guzzler and taking a spin. Instead, we’re talking about the other kind of driving—the kind that gets you outside, warms your muscles, doesn’t pollute the environment, and might take a few strokes off your handicap.

Driving ranges for golfers abound in Westchester County, and, unlike a regular round of golf, a day of driving doesn’t eat up four hours of your time (unless you want it to), doesn’t require tee times (though spots tend to fill up quickly), and is good for families who may not have the skills or patience (or desire) to go all 18 holes together. Here’s where you can practice your swing.

Doral Arrowwood Golf Club
Rye Brook (914) 323-4478; doralarrowwood.com
Cost:
$10 for a medium bucket (approximately 35 balls); $15 for a large bucket (approximately 70 balls).
In addition to a driving range, the practice facilities at Doral include a bunker and professional putting green.

Yorktown Golf and Baseball Center
Mohegan Lake (914) 526-4823
yorktowngolfandbaseball.com
Cost:
$7 for a small bucket (approximately 50 balls); $10 for a medium bucket (approximately 85 balls); $12 for a large bucket (approximately 120 balls).
Two tiers of hitting stations ensure that everyone gets a chance to swing, and, while you practice your slice, you can send the kids off for mini-golf and batting practice.

National Golfworx
Baldwin Place (914) 628-1839; golfworx.com
Cost:
$7 for a small bucket (approximately 60 balls); $11 for a large bucket (approximately 120 balls).
Look out for all-you-can-hit specials, which, for night owls, can last past sundown at lighted tee boxes.

Westchester Golf Range
White Plains (914) 592-6553; westchestergolfers.com
Cost:
$5 for a small bucket (approximately 30 balls); $7 for a medium bucket (approximately 50 balls); $11 for a large bucket (approximately 100 balls).
Devotees swear by this driving range because live balls—not range balls—are used, so you get a true picture of how much more you need to practice.

In addition, you can find ranges at some of Westchester County’s public courses (golf.westchestergov.com).

Dunwoodie Driving Range
Yonkers (914) 231-3490
