Trail Blazers Sleep Away Camp
Montague, NJ (212) 529-5113; trailblazers.org
If unplugging and getting back to basics is on your child’s wish list for the summer, look no further. Campers here experience life in the outdoors by living in teepees and canvas hogans in small “family” groups of eight to 10 of their peers. In addition to embracing rustic housing, Trail Blazers develop outdoor living skills through environmental education, outdoor cooking and backpacking, and participate in outdoors-y activities like mountain biking, archery, fishing, and hiking. Challenging trail expeditions called “vagabonds” cap off the summer. These one- to four-day foot/bike/canoe trips along the Appalachian Trail or Delaware River provide campers the perfect chance to put to the test the wilderness, survival, and group skills they have developed.
