Sculptor William T. Rowe's Tree Art

Mark Egener of Bedford Hills has a 17-foot-tall giraffe in his backyard, as well as a completely still lab-pitbull mix modeled after his dog, Kira. He also has a finished carving of his oldest son; the sculpture of his younger son is almost finished, “save for his legs and sneakers.”  Both are sculptures made from trees by William T. Rowe, 46, of Westport, Connecticut-based Nantucket Woodcarving. “They’re each carved from Northeastern white pines—aka old-growth pine—that are between one hundred and one hundred eighty years old and plentiful in Westchester,” Rowe says. “Rather than remove damaged and fallen trees, I can save a tree through creativity.” The price range for his sculptures: $8,000 to $35,000.
