Uncommon Scents

On your wedding day, your favorite come- hither potion or wear-to-work eau de toilette simply won’t do. A wedding fragrance should be memorable, majestic, and above all, romantic. We’ve rounded up three that fit the bill:

Clive Christian No. 1 The world’s costliest perfume comes in a crystal bottle with an 18-carat gold-and-diamond (it’s a third of a carat) decorative collar that resembles an engagement ring. The stuff inside ain’t too shabby, either: a floral-Oriental fragrance blending top notes of pineapple, plum, Mirabelle, bergamot, lemon, and cardamom, with heart notes of rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, orris, and orchid. Base notes of vanilla, tonka seeds, cedarwood, sandalwood, and musk amber add warmth and depth. Katie Holmes reportedly wore it when she married Tom Cruise. $2,350 for a one-ounce bottle of pure perfume.

Fleurissimo by Creed Prince Rainier of Monaco commissioned this fresh floral for his bride, Grace Kelly, to wear on their wedding day in 1956. The pedigree is unbeatable—Jacqueline  Kennedy Onassis was another “royal” fan—but so is the scent, a rich blend of bergamot, tuberose, Bulgarian rose, violet, and Florentine iris in an ambergris base. $98 for a one-ounce bottle.

Love in White by Creed The name is perfectly apt and so is the elegant, floral-Oriental scent. The top note is orange zest. Middle notes include rice husk, iris, white jasmine, daffodils, magnolia, and Bulgarian rose. Vanilla, ambergris, and sandalwood comprise the base. $115 for a one-ounce bottle.

Airbrushed Perfection

Why retouch your photos when you can”airbrush” your makeup? Christina Nappi, makeup artist, haircolorist, stylist, and owner of Zazo Salon in Bedford Hills, loves the flawless finish she can achieve with airbrushing. “With airbrushing, makeup is applied through a compressor,” she explains. “It goes on soft, natural, and completely even—just like you see in magazines.” While she can apply everything from foundation to eye shadow with the precision of her compressor gun (it sprays a very narrow, fine mist), Nappi says this tool is ideal for applying foundation. “I can shade features, hide scars, birthmarks, and acne. I can use it on the face or the body and even use it to hide tattoos. But the water-based foundation never looks cakey, and it doesn’t rub off on clothes.” Nappi charges $100 for makeup application in her salon but offers complete onsite hair and makeup service packages. A full-service salon for men, Shortkutz offers a Bachelor Spa Package which includes barber cut, hot-towel shave with a straight razor, massage, facial, and hand and foot paraffin treatments. All for $140.

That straight razor shave! If your man wants to look clean and smooth on his wedding day, nothing beats an old-fashioned (and hard to find) professional shave.

Want to accessorize that strapless gown with a little color? Your dermatologist will tell you that a sunless tan is safe, but on the one day you can’t afford to look orange, blotchy, or streaked, attempting to go beyond the pale can actually be a high-risk proposition. Sandra Rovira, owner of Epidavros Spa in Mount Kisco, explains how to pull it off:

» Don’t Do It Yourself. Bad results have the potential to wreck your day so put yourself in a professional’s hands.

» Look For a Treatment That Includes Exfoliation. Uneven exfoliation means an uneven tan. “Some places want the client to exfoliate at home and then come in for the tanning application,” Rovira says, “but most people miss the hard-to-reach spots.”

» Do a Trial Run. It takes approximately two weeks for a sunless tan to fade away. If you don’t like the look and your wedding is tomorrow, you’re stuck!

» Time It Right. Rovira suggests coming in two days before the wedding. “On day one, we do the exfoliation and one application of sunless tanning lotion. On day two, we can add another application for deeper color or tweak any areas that didn’t come out evenly.”
