And let’s just say that you’ve done a bad thing: you’ve forgotten to order your ultra-fashionable, heritage-breed turkey. Of course, Stone Barns sold out weeks and weeks ago, and Heritage Breeds USA needs time to ship. What do you do if you’ve left ordering your heritage-breed turkey until the absolute last minute?
Table Local Market (11 Babbitt Rd, Bedford Hills 914-241-0269; tablelocalmarket.com). Table Local Market will be sourcing its heritage-breed birds from Hudson Valley farms. While pre-ordering is safest (and you won’t get stuck with a too large/too small bird), you can still drop into Table Market as late as Wednesday the 24th and perhaps find a heritage-breed turkey. Better still, Table Local Market offers a huge selection of prepared Thanksgiving dishes. You can walk out carrying a whole, locally raised feast.
Crisfield’s Prime Meats (61 Purchase St, Rye 914-967-0152; crisfields.com). This old-school butcher has been supplying Rye with its meat for 31 years, which is not to say that these purveyors don’t move with the times. This year, Crisfield’s is offering newfangled, old-fashioned heritage-breed turkeys along with conventional Broad Breasted Whites.
If you’re willing to risk leftovers until Christmas with too big a bird, you can stop into Crisfield’s as late as Wednesday evening, but it would be wise to order early.
Fairway Market (847 Pelham Pkwy, Pelham Manor 914-712-0011; fairwaymarket.com). Although they call him “Mr. Thanksgiving,” Fairway’s master butcher Ray Venezia actually hates the holiday. “It’s full of sloppy, heavy lifting, with crabby people and low profits.” (Venezia earned the title “Mr. Thanksgiving“ for his videos of how a butcher carves a turkey, available on nytimes.com, rachelraysshow.com, and fairwaymarket.com.) At Fairway, you’ll find heritage-breed Bourbon Reds, plus Bourbon Red parts (legs and wings) for stock or extras. Families that need more white meat can supplement with Murray’s whole turkey breasts. “We also offer organic turkeys, smoked turkeys, and oven-ready turkeys,” Venezia says. “Plus, this is Fairway, so we’ll be mobbed Wednesday night slinging last-second birds!” Look for Fairway’s new Stamford, Connecticut, store to debut in early November (check out the website, fairwaymarket.com).
