R5 Westchester Triathalon 2009

Who needs Hawaii? Let the Ironman have Kailua-Kona—we have our own triathlon right here (and the views along the route are just as pretty). Held this year on September 27, the Jarden Westchester Triathlon begins with a .9-mile swim in the scenic Long Island Sound at Playland, which is followed by a hilly, 25-mile bike course through Port Chester; Rye Brook; Greenwich, Connecticut; North Castle; and Harrison before a 6.2-mile run brings everybody home for post-race activities.

Even by triathlon standards, this race is particularly tough. “On a scale of one to ten, I’d say the race is an eight-and-a-half,” says Phil Gormley, chairman of the Westchester Triathlon Committee. The most grueling part is “Claire’s Climb,” a punishing cycling ascent in the hills of Greenwich named after Gormley’s sister, who recenly died from ALS and whose namesake charity will this year benefit from the funds raised by the race.
