Food-truck fare that’s cheap, tasty, and reasonably free of grease can be had at Magdlaena Toledo’s Pink Panther Hot Dog Wagon and Mexican Food (Saw Mill River Rd just south of Jackson Ave, Hastings-on-Hudson). A steady mix of locals, contractors, DPW workers, teens, and housewives line up daily at the 24-year-old institution for tacos (chicken, beef, pork, vegetarian, $2.50); tostadas (chicken, beef, pork, vegetarian, $3); soups ($3); and all-beef hot dogs ($1.50) with a killer no-bean beef chili (.25) and gratis sauerkraut, cheese, and onions. Toledo, a native of Chile and self-taught cook who came to the US 30 years ago, makes her fillings, chili, soups, as well as a medium-hot salsa of diced tomatoes, onions, fresh cilantro, and spices, right on the truck. Just don’t expect to share a hot dog with Todelo—she’s a vegetarian.
The Pink Panther is parked south of Jackson Avenue on Saw Mill River Road Monday to Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm.
