On His Game
Rufus Wainwright has always looked to the past for inspiration, borrowing from piano-tinkering singer/songwriters and opera divas in equal measure. It makes sense, then, that for his most recent album, Out of the Game, he’d team up with producer Mark Ronson, known for giving a retro sound to the music of artists including Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Christina Aguilera. Hear the results when Wainwright performs at The Performing Arts Center on July 27. Tickets are available at the Tarrytown Music Hall.
Renaissance Fan
Sure, visitors to Caramoor could always get a taste of the Renaissance by walking around the gorgeous Renaissance Garden. But families can go one step further on July 22, when Caramoor hosts A Day in the Renaissance. The grounds will recall England and Italy in the 16th century, and visitors can take part in the songs, dances, and street theater of the era. (And, of course, they can hear a little Shakespeare.) Costumes, masks, and picnics are encouraged.
Vamp It Up
If you can debate the relative merits of Johnny Depp’s and Jonathan Frid’s portrayal of Barnabas Collins, you may be a die-hard Dark Shadows fan. And, if you’re truly devoted, you’d know that two Dark Shadows movies were filmed at Lyndhurst, making it the perfect location for the Dark Shadows Weekend in Tarrytown, taking place July 28 and July 29. On Saturday, fans can tour the mansion, see actors from the original Dark Shadows soap opera do Q&As and video presentations, get autographs, and browse and buy memorabilia from the series. The evening will end with a screening of House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows, the two movies filmed on Lyndhurst’s grounds. Then, on Sunday, fans can attend a Dark Shadows luncheon at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Tarrytown. For more information, visit dark shadowsfestival.com.

The Kite Stunner
If Mary Poppins suggested it, then it must be a good idea: Let’s all go fly a kite. The perfect opportunity? The Katonah Museum of Art’s Kite Festival, which will take place at The Harvey School in Katonah on July 21. There, families can construct their own high-flying kites at half-hour workshops running continuously throughout the day (though advanced registration is suggested). If you just want to be a spectator, you can see giant Chinese dragon kites, fighting kite demonstrations, and a kite candy drop. End the day back at the museum, where you can tour the Rising Dragon Contemporary Chinese Photography exhibit and purchase snacks from the Rickshaw Dumpling truck in the sculpture garden
Million-Dollar Man
Johnny Cash. Jerry Lee Lewis. Roy Orbison. Carl Perkins. Elvis Presley. Any music fan worth his or her salt would know that the thread connecting these music titans is Sun Records, the legendary record label that launched some of the biggest names in the business. Chris Isaak is certainly one of these music fans, and, on his most recent album, Beyond the Sun, he pays tribute to these recording artists with his own version of seminal Sun songs such as “Ring of Fire,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Dixie Fried,” and others. You can take your own mini-trip to Memphis when Isaak performs at the Paramount Center for the Arts on July 6. Think of it as a one-man Million Dollar Quartet.
