R5 Westchester Artist's Portrait of Local Plumber On Display in Smithsonian

When Herman Evly went by Patricia Horing’s home to work on the plumbing, he probably never imagined the visit would land him a place amongst presidents and celebrities. But that, in fact, is exactly what wound up happening.

Horing, a publicist-turned-painter who enjoys creating portraits of her friends, family, and others  – including her plumber, evidently – asked Evly (who was fixing the tub) if she could paint his picture, and he agreed. She did a sketch, and a month later, the painting was finished.

She later entered the painting into a contest via email, and then forgot about it – until she received the exciting news that the painting had been selected to hang in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery – as of one of just 50 lucky winners. Her painting will be on display through August.
