R5 Three School Maintenance Workers in Westchester Earn Big Bucks

Quick—what occupations come to mind when you think of a six-figure salary? Doctor? Lawyer?

Well, how about plumber? Or custodian?

Yes, you read that right. According to a list published by the Empire Center for New York State Policy of the 100 highest paid employees for 2008 through 2009 (think business managers, custodians, bus drivers, aides, and the like), three Westchester school maintenance workers were among the highest paid nonprofessional public school employees in the state.

A New Rochelle maintenance worker reeled in $143,521 in one year. A plumber in the same district earned $137,397. And a custodian in Rye was paid $142,104.
