Winners
Benjamin Van Doren. The White Plains High School senior (featured in “Teens to Watch” in March’s issue) earned fifth place in the national Intel Science Talent Search. The Cornell-bound student will receive a $30,000 prize.
Pleasantville Residents. GQ named Pleasantville the second-best-smelling city (though it’s actually a village) in the world.
New York Medical College. Its researchers are developing the vaccine for the 2012-’13 flu season. NYMC has developed the strains used in the nation’s annual flu vaccine since 2004.
Losers
Guest House Community Services. The Peekskill-based agency will repay the federal government more than $150,000 for over-billing Medicaid. Executive Director Joseph Akumu is already behind bars for his role in Guest House’s insurance fraud.
New Rochelle Residents. A report released by the New Rochelle Police Department reveals that serious crimes in the city increased by 21 percent in 2011 over the prior year. The police commissioner says part of the spike can be attributed to a change in accounting methods.
Samuel Fanelli. The 23-year-old White Plains man was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing and trading child pornography online. Additionally, Fanelli admitted to molesting children while babysitting.
