R5 This Month's Winners and Losers: August 2012

–    Miles Townes, Quinton Crandell, Robert Conner, Nestor Torivio, Aubrey Jones, and Oscar Pryce. The six 2012 graduates of Lincoln Hall, a residential school for troubled boys in Somers, were among several students nationwide who received the first Duke of Edinburgh Young Americans’ Challenge Award at the United Nations in New York, for their accomplishments in community service.
–    Richard Rodriguez. The off-duty Yonkers firefighter saved the life of an 80-year-old fellow patron at a Yonkers restaurant. Rodriguez, who was celebrating his daughter’s high school graduation with his family, performed CPR on the man until EMS arrived and successfully resuscitated him.
–    Osborn Elementary School students. The enterprising kids in Rye collected more than $6,000 from bake sales, chores, and donations to purchase 200 new duffel bags for The New York Foundling, a New York charity, which gives the bags to children in foster care.

–    Dane J. Simpson. The Queens resident was busted by Yonkers police for possessing a loaded handgun after they observed him walking down the street in an “unusual manner.” Simpson was carrying the firearm between his thighs.
–    Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library patrons. The library is closing its doors earlier, thanks to cuts mandated by the state. The library will now be open 47 hours a week instead of 55.
–    Melissa Rodriguez and David Roman. Rodriguez, of Manhattan, and Roman, of Port Chester,  were charged with larceny after being caught on surveillance video stealing from an unconscious man who passed out on a Port Chester sidewalk. On the video, the two can be seen rummaging through the man’s pockets—neither called 911 to get the man help.
