Hope’s Door. The Pleasantville shelter for victims of domestic violence got a much-needed makeover thanks to donations from Oprah Winfrey’s O magazine and Benjamin Moore Paints after it won a reader contest by the magazine looking for the best shelter in the country.
Solomon Schechter School. Thanks to a federal grant, the Conservative Jewish school in Hartsdale became one of the first schools in the region to install solar panels, which will satisfy almost a third of the school’s electrical needs.
Indian Point. The county’s nuclear power plant won an important victory after a board of independent safety experts recommended to federal regulators that Indian Point should be granted a 20-year renewal of its operating license.
LOSERS
Rye Teachers Association. Its contract dispute with the school district is now entering its third year, after the RTA rejected an offer by the district of a 19.3-percent raise over five-years—in the midst of a recession.
Alfredo Vasquez. The 31-year-old registered sex offender was arrested in Peekskill for returning there after being deported to his native Guatemala upon serving his prison sentence.
Dr. William Moody. The White Plains dentist, famous for his 2007 “parking rage” assault captured on video and immortalized on the Internet, was arrested again—this time for failing to pay a $160 fine related to his original conviction.
