The city of White Plains hosted its first-ever preview event for the third annual Harlem Fine Arts Show. Mayor Thomas M. Roach welcomed guests, noting “We are thrilled so many people from such diverse backgrounds [came to this first-ever] preview of the Harlem Fine Arts Show…There is so much bravery [in artwork because] the artists [veterans and as well as the young students] are exposing their souls to us and it is something to aspire too.”
The one-day exhibit organized by Friends of White Plains Youth Bureau, Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Westchester Alumnae Chapter, offered members of the community an opportunity to participate in an advance viewing of more than sixty original works from February’s Harlem Fine Arts Show. In addition to art from local students grades one through twelve, exhibiting artists’ works included those by photographer James Van Der Zee, Andrew Nichols, Edwin Lester, Gwen Redfern, Brent Bailer, Minna Dunn, and Sir Shadow.
Proceeds from the special reception benefited local youth programs.
