R5 The New New Haven Line

Attention Metro-North New Haven line commuters: prettier, more comfy, more modern cars are on their way. The Connecticut DOT has ordered new cars with power outlets, big windows, an automated public-address system, individual headrests, and more legroom. Commuters can likely expect the first of the new trains, which cost $2.3 million per car, to appear this coming January. “We’ve been trying to get the state to move on this for close to a decade,” says Jim Cameron, chairman of the Metro-North Commuter Council, a watchdog group. “It wasn’t until Governor Rell got into office in 2004 that we started making headway. Governor Rowland had been unresponsive.”
