R5 Study Finds White Plains Has Highest Concentration of Doctors in US

Just a couple of weeks ago, we told you that White Plains ranked third in Forbes’ list of the most expensive cities in the United States.

But did you know that, according to a study conducted at Dartmouth Medical School using two decades worth of medical data, White Plains is also home to the highest concentration of doctors in the nation?

The study found that White Plains has more than twice the number of doctors per capita than Bakersfield, California—an area which is not as affluent as White Plains. When asked if Westchester County was perhaps overserved with doctors, hospital executives such as Michael Israel, chief executive of Westchester Medical Center, disagreed, saying the specialists that flock to the area are essential to their patients.

At his medical center in Valhalla, close to neighboring White Plains, Medicare spends roughly $87,000 in the last two years of patients’ lives, and in the last six months of life, patients were in the hospital an average of 24 days and seen by 53 physicians.
