R5 Restaurant Openings, Closings, Kitchen Changes, and Food Events in Westchester County, NY: September 2012

Tim Reinke and John Sharp, owners of Birdsall House in Peekskill, are set to open Gleason’s, named after actor and former Peekskill resident Jackie Gleason (911 South St, Peekskill, no phone as of press time; gleasons-peeksill.com). On the menu: artisan flatbread pizzas, pastas, soups, and salads (entrees from $14 to $20). Birdsall House Chef March Walker is overseeing the kitchen. Gleason’s will be open for lunch and dinner every day // Recently opened Indian restaurant, Taj Palace (95 S Broadway, White Plains 914-437-5900; tajpalacewp.com), offers chicken Kolhapuri (a fiery chicken curry), tandoori salmon, and shrimp biryani. Entrée prices range from $15 to $25. Lunch and dinner are served every day, with an $11.95 lunch buffet weekdays and a Maharaja buffet Saturday and Sunday ($15.95) // La Piazza (37 Ethan Allen Highway, Ridgefield, Connecticut 203-544-1212; lapiazzact.com) is a new Italian-American restaurant, headed by Executive Chef Bob DelBuono, a Lincoln Culinary Institute’s Center for Culinary Arts alum. On the menu: gourmet pizzas, ricotta gnocchi, horseradish-crusted salmon, and veal scaloppine. Mains are $14 to $25; 12-inch pizzas are $10 to $13. La Piazza is open every day for lunch and dinner // Carl Van Dekker, previously an apprentice chef at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Daniel, and Gramercy Tavern, is serving gourmet hot dogs and sausages at his new eatery, Village Dog (18 Main St, Tarrytown 914-909-9000; villagedogtarry town.com). The restaurant uses sustainable, local ingredients to craft hot dogs such as the SoEul with pork belly, kimchi, and plum ketchup and specialty sausages like North African spiced lamb and Flying Pigs Farm’s Heritage pork. Main menu items cost between $6 and $9. Open daily for lunch and dinner // The owner of New Rochelle’s Modern Restaurant & Pizzeria, is set to open Modern Italiano (310 Huguenot St, New Rochelle). The restaurant will be an extension of the original Modern,
offering a similar menu of traditional Italian dishes. Unlike its counterpart, Modern Italiano will have a bar, lounge, and a private room for up to 90 people // Alvin & Friends Restaurant (914-654-6548; alvinandfriendsrestaurant.com) is moving to larger digs, taking over the former location of Mo’s Clubhouse Grill (14 Memorial Highway). The new space will allow for outdoor seating // Butterfield 8 (butte rfield8whiteplains.com), a gastropub with locations in midtown Manhattan and Stamford, Connecticut, is planning to open at 147 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains sometime this fall // Adjacent to Butterfield 8 and also scheduled to open sometime this fall will be Lola’s Mexican Kitchen (lolaswhiteplains.com), a tequila bar and restaurant with another location in Stamford, Connecticut // Ichiro Asian Bistro signed a lease for the space at 78 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains // Greek standout Lefteris Gyro in Tarrytown and Mount Kisco is opening at the end of this year a third spot at One Ridge Hill in Yonkers // New to downtown Rye is coffeehouse Loco Latte (137 Purchase St, Rye 914-305-3888; locolatte.com), serving fresh-roasted coffee plus muffins, bagels, and croissants, brought in from Manhattan’s Balthazar and the Hudson Valley’s Bread Alone, among other prominent bakeries. Loco Latte is open seven days a week, starting at 6 am Monday to Saturday and 8 am on Sunday // Burrata Wood Fired Pizza (425 White Plains Rd, Eastchester 914-337-3700;
burratapizza.com) is offering pasta dishes for the first time: potato gnocchi with local basil pesto, mezzalune ravioli, and pappardelle with wild mushrooms (See review, page 176) // Jacob Bowser, previously sous chef at the Upper West Side’s highly regarded Telepan, is the new executive chef at Arrosto (25 S Regent St, Port Chester 914-939-2727; arrostorestaurant.com), replacing Richard Corbo // French bistro Pascal’s (141 Chatsworth Ave, Larchmont), in business since February 1, 2000, has closed.
