Some 200 people attended the Afya Foundation’s first inaugural Benefit Awards Dinner honoring visionaries in global health, which was held at X2O Xaviars on the Hudson in Yonkers. The Yonkers-based nonprofit health organization honored the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Dr. Jacques Sebisaho, whose relief efforts go to help the residents of the island of Idjwi, located between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
“By providing medical equipment and care to people in need, Afya fills a crucial gap in many people’s lives worldwide,” said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “The moving speeches by Evenel St. Vil from Haiti and all of the outstanding honorees really showed the impact this organization has around the world.” X2O Chef Peter Kelly crafted a menu inspired by the cuisines of Africa and Haiti. The evening began with cocktails and a silent auction at 7 pm and then continued with dinner and an awards program.
