No Top Female Psychiatrists?

I thought it was interesting that your list of top psychiatrists in November’s “Top Doctors” issue included only male psychiatrists. I am a woman psychiatrist who has been on your list of top psychiatrists in the past along with other female colleagues of mine. Most women patients want to be treated by a woman psychiatrist and a majority (more than 50 percent) of male patients also prefer being treated by a woman psychiatrist. The good women psychiatrists in Westchester County generally have completely or nearly full private practices and, unfortunately, it is often difficult to find a woman psychiatrist who has time to see a new patient. Male psychiatrists, on the other hand, are usually looking for patients to fill their practices. Given this reality in Westchester (and it’s a pretty similar situation in Manhattan and elsewhere in the country), it is too bad that you couldn’t find one woman psychiatrist to put on your Top Doctors list.

Editor’s Response: We asked William
Liss-Levinson, vice-president of Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd, the medical database firm that provided our Top Doctors list, for a response. “We are extremely sensitive to the issue of wanting to have more female psychiatrists identified within our Top Doctors database and specifically as it relates to Westchester County,” he says. “We’re not always perfect here and, somehow, someone always will be left out. Part of the problem is the shortage of currently identified Castle Connolly top female psychiatrists in general, a situation we see improving as more women join the physician workforce. But, in hindsight, there might have been one or two female doctors we might have included instead of one or two of the males.”

AP Madness

As a newcomer to the USA, I loved your article on college admissions. You mentioned there were 12 schools that opted out of the AP courses. Which schools are they?

Good & Plenty

My compliments on your October 2007 issue. However, according to the 25th anniversary issue of the Forbes 400 Richest Americans, George Soros of Bedford is ranked 33rd and worth 8.8 billion, and not 27th as stated in “Fun Facts.” Nonetheless, the issue was enjoyable and huge.

Park the Car

“Public Transportation 101” (Marisa Iallonardo—November 2007) reminds me that the next time you get upset when filling your gasoline tank or stuck in gridlock traffic, why not consider the public transportation alternative. Metro-North and Bee Line Bus provide such services. Try riding a local or express bus, commuter van, ferry, or commuter rail.  All of these systems use less fuel and move far more people than conventional single occupancy vehicles.

Oops: In our October issue’s article about spectacular closets (“Inside Story”), we left out the name of the designer behind Debbie and Kevin Geigers’ closet. The designer is Heather Bartling of By Design in Stamford, Connecticut; (203) 968-8444.
