Usually I like to add a pop of color to bring the design more to life, but in this case, it came out amazing.” Mastroianni used LED lights behind and above the draperies to create a glowing effect around the tub; additional LEDs were placed behind the mirrors that accent the mosaic wall. Custom mirrors placed behind the vanity go from floor to ceiling to appear as if they were floating behind the wall.

The existing bathroom was large, covered in mirrors and dark gray marble, and had a tiny hallway in the middle with a dressing table. Laura Bohn and Scott Bromley gutted the space and enlarged the greenhouse behind the tub. “The round tub was the organizing element and creates the traffic pattern up the step and around to the large walk-in shower,” Bohn says. “The right side of the room was done in teak, which matches the details in the master bedroom closet and incorporates his-and-her toilet rooms as well as a separate vanity for the husband. The wife has a glass dressing table and slipper chair. The bathroom was intended to be very stylish and glamorous, just like the client.”

For his own home, Gregory Allan Cramer wanted his bathroom to exude a soft and serene feel, “like a resort-style bathroom,” he says. And it certainly has the amenities of a resort: radiant-heated floors that stretch all the way to the double steam shower with a hand-built teak bench. A small niche was created along the wall to give it “a decorative moment,” the designer says. Cramer installed additional sockets below the vanity to keep the countertop space open. The walnut with ivory overglaze cabinets are a nice counter balance to the wall-to-wall mirrors that “hover” behind them. Cramer had light fixtures placed on the mirror of the vanity to give the illusion that the glass is floating. The bathroom is bright, with light filtering through natural bamboo shades, and the walls were treated with a hand finish to match the coloring of the stone.

“I wanted to create a bathroom with a hip and energetic vibe for a pre-teen boy that he will still love as he grows up,” Mimi Fong says. “The old tub and curtain were replaced with a shower enclosed in a frameless glass door, opening up the bathroom visually by allowing the eyes to travel further in the room. I installed a low bench in the shower and continued it out to the vanity, so that it appears to come through the shower door. The bright green geometric-patterned tiles turned the bench into a fun focal point while disguising the bulkhead beneath. Dark gray floor tiles in both the bathroom and shower made the room appear larger and reinforced the visual continuity of a bigger space.” The bathroom won first place Best of Best award in the 2009 NKBA Metropolitan Design Competition.

“The house was a 1950s ranch that had a layer of renovations done in the 1970s, and, given the technologies and materials of the time, it was very well done,” says architect Rosamund Young. So well done that the homeowners kept and restored a full wall of mirrored doors along with a wall of Formica cabinetry, and demolished the rest. “Peter Romaniello of Conceptual Lighting (conceptuallighting.com) created the custom track lighting and pendants in the room and contractor Paul Fontana of the Cum Laude Group (cumlaudegroup.com) did an excellent job of carrying out the vision.”
