Good Deeds

Thank you for Good Deeds: Charity Begins at Home (December 2011). Many of your readers might have been surprised to learn that there is need so broad and so deep here in our own backyard; many more would be astonished to learn that in 2010, there were almost 13,000 domestic violence incident reports filed with local police departments. I’d add to your list of charitable organizations Hope’s Door, an agency dedicated to helping domestic violence victims.

Hope’s Door Treasurer and Trustee, Bedford

Lincoln Hall should have been included in your Good Deeds feature. Lincoln Hall began as an orphanage. Over the years, the population has evolved, but it still is a helping, caring place for young men.

My Sisters’ Place, based in White Plains, supports victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Your readers should know about it.

Don’t Forget These Facts

In your December “100 Fascinating Facts About Westchester,” you mentioned the USS Westchester County but overlooked two US Navy ships named after (The Battle of) White Plains, one of which is rather famous. The first USS White Plains was an aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943, which won the Presidential Unit Citation for helping to turn back a Japanese force during the Battle of Samar off Leyte in 1944. The second was a combat stores carrier commissioned in 1968, one of the first Navy ships to have women sailors.
Jon Cohen, Scarsdale

Oops! In last month’s “100 Fascinating Facts…,” we wrote that the Alexander Smith & Sons’ Carpet Company mills were on North Broadway in Yonkers. The mills were primarily on Nepperhan Avenue and Saw Mill River Road. Also, in our FotoFiles’s Mount Kisco Child Care Center photo, the two people on the left, Rich Ruksenas of Beacon, New York, and Jennifer Ponce of Carmel, New York were incorrectly identified.
