www.albanoappliance.com

Back when Albano Appliance & Service opened its doors in 1952, Roper ranges were the rage and Westinghouse was widespread. Today, you’ll find a slew of state-of-the-art brands such as Viking, Wolf, Sub-Zero, Bosch, LG, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid (to name a few), including the commercial-style appliances de rigeur in today’s high-tech kitchens. As a factory-authorized service center, the company dispatches its own service people for all of its products, a boon well appreciated by anyone who’s ever gotten lost in a big manufacturers’ automated telephone system. Despite the expert service staff and knowledgeable sales team, the most sought-after staffer may be Chef Jehan de Noüe (formerly of Pound Ridge’s North Star restaurant), who teaches classes in the showroom and gathers area chefs not only to demonstrate their own talents, but the talents of Albano Appliance’s cooking equipment.

Appliance Connection

Bronx

(718) 324-5252

www.appliancesalesrus.com

In business since 1994, Appliance Connection says it’s committed to making customers happy. And that it does. The sales showroom is open and staffed six days a week, and a fully equipped, radio-dispatched service department trained in the latest technology stands at the ready every single day. The uniformed delivery staff uncrates your new appliance, inspects it for defects and damages, and then hauls away your old appliance as well as the packing from its replacement. Most items are delivered within two days. What’s not to love?

Appliance Sales Plus

www.appliancesalesplus.com

After years as field servicemen for General Electric appliances, Karl Thimm and his brother-in-law, Lenny Losito, knew one thing for sure: top-rate appliances and great service go hand in hand. Their store, Appliance Sales Plus, which sells General Electric (but also Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, General Electric, KitchenAid, and more), banks on that philosophy. Backing up service for the major appliances it sells, the company has a well-staffed department, responding speedily to customer’s calls.

Atlantic Appliance guarantees that it sells its wares at the lowest prices. Period. You’ll find major-brands (think Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Thermador, GE Monogram, and Miele) refrigerators, ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, gas and electric ranges, and washers/dryers, with some models discounted at up to 50 percent off retail price. As a factory-authorized parts and service department, one call and a factory-trained serviceman is at your door. And, if you find a product you bought at Atlantic advertised for less elsewhere in the tri-state area, don’t fume: the company will cheerfully refund the difference.

One satisfied customer told us that after having trouble with an appliance, Berger replaced it with a more expensive product without charging a penny. Try that at a Big-Box store.

Curto’s Appliances

1900 Central Park Ave.

Yonkers

(914) 793-5600/(800) 966-2878

www.curtos.com

You’ve heard of Curto’s (who hasn’t heard of Curto’s?): it’s a 6,000-square-foot Central Park Avenue institution, which debuted the same year as The Ed Sullivan Show and Kiss Me, Kate (and, in its own circles, to nearly as much acclaim). Its salespeople boast an average of 18 years experience selling appliances and electronics (but their employer continues to send them for intensive product training). Our question to Curtos’s: how can an independent, family-owned business compete with all of those oversized retailers along the strip? The answer: it buys appliances with a group of 700 other dealers, so the steep discount it receives due to its multi-billion-dollar buying power is passed along to customers.

www.consolidatedplumbingsupply.com

Step into Consolidated Plumbing Supply Co.’s 3,500-square-foot-showroom and you’ll find one of the most established family-owned businesses in Westchester—80 years young this year—that still does business the old-fashioned way, one client at a time. (It also happens to be the oldest Kohler distributor in the county, but who’s counting?) There’s little old-fashioned about its offerings, however. More than two-dozen current brands of faucets, fixtures, shower doors, vanities, boilers, and heaters are proof that this octogenarian operation is still on top of the trends.

Perfect style, perfect fit.

During the Great Depression, N&S Supply founder Louis Nussbickel had the foresight to start a business to meet the plumbing- and heating-supply needs for customers outside New York City. The company is still doing just that with four showrooms stocking a whopping supply of whirlpools, tubs and showers, kitchen and bath sinks and faucets, toilets, and vanities. You’ll even find steam rooms and towel warmers (which, no doubt, would have had young Louis Nussbickel’s jaw dropping).

Culinary Arts

Chef Central

45 Central Park Ave.

Hartsdale,

(914) 328-1376

www.chefcentral.com

Epicurean magazine called Chef Central “a 15,000-square-foot paradise for cooks…” If the editors were impressed with that, they should high-tail it to Westchester, where the sister store looms even larger at 21,000 square feet, a mecca for established culinary artists and Rachael Ray wannabes alike. Its thousands of offerings—cookware, bakeware, serveware, utensils, appliances, storage solutions, gourmet foods, gizmos, and gadgets—make ideas start to simmer, and Chef Central’s great wall of kitchen utensils provides an education unto itself. (A citrus sectoner? A shrimp deveiner? You bet). In-store services include knife sharpening, free gift wrapping and a gift registry.

Landau’s membership in ASID is the icing on the cake.

(212) 486 6338

www.bilotta.com

Bilotta believes that you wouldn’t buy a new car without test-driving it, so why would you undertake a high-end kitchen redo without checking out the goods? With five showrooms filled to the brim with kitchen displays (including a working one at MacMenamin’s Grill in New Rochelle, where cooking classes are held), you can put the gears in spin. Setting the benchmark is a family matter at the company, where second-generation co-owners Regina, Jim, and Maria Bilotta, who learned about the custom cabinetry business by working in their father’s mill shop, are adamant about high-end design and quality. This is apparent in the company’s cabinetry, from the most traditional (Rutt, Wood-Mode, and its own Bilotta Collection) to the ultra-contemporary SieMatic and Artcraft. Perhaps that’s why Bilotta’s reputation has spread far beyond the tri-state area, and the company’s kitchens can be found in places as far-flung as Bermuda and Spain (and in kitchens used by clients such as Emeril Lagasse).

So many countertop choices, so little time. At least, that’s what it feels like at Brooks Custom, which has been making countertops of wood, stainless steel, concrete, zinc, glass, pewter, and bronze since 1977. (Pewter or bronze countertops…what could be more cutting-edge?) For those going green, Brooks Custom only purchases its wood from government-licensed loggers and avoids using threatened species. A team of 30 master craftsman do it all in a 30,000-square-foot facility with modern fabricating, drafting, and finishing systems.
