R5 Interior Designer Patricia O’Shaughnessy’s Favorite Home Accessories

“I like rooms with contrasts: sleek with ornate, contemporary with vintage, modern with naive or primitive,” says Patricia O’Shaughnessy of Patricia O’Shaughnessy Design. And her Bronxville home is just that—a blend of furnishings she has found over the years at antiques and consignment shops, at rummage sales, and even in the trash. Here are some of her most beloved belongings.

Red Hot

One of O’Shaughnessy’s design signatures is to use a soothing palette with a splash of a hot color, like this Italian chair that she bought nearly 25 years ago from a showroom (now closed) in Manhattan. “The slice of red is quite delicious,” she says.

Mercury Rising

“They were still using real mercury in these lamps in the early 1900s,” O’Shaughnessy says. “It was a bit of a stretch to buy it at the time, but it was a wise decision—this lamp is now probably worth ten times what I paid for it.”

The Brass Ring

This set of brass candlesticks with removable brass rings to catch candle wax was found at a church white elephant sale in Old Lyme, Connecticut, O’Shaughnessy’s favorite hunting ground.

Asian Accent

This Cloisonné cache pot was discovered in a huge Hong Kong warehouse in 1991. It reminded O’Shaugnessy of her mother’s vintage Chinese ceramic lamps, which she had loved since childhood.

Italian Style

O’Shaughnessy often uses CX Design light fixtures made of Italian scavo glass in her clients’ homes; she has several in her own as well, including this “Man Ray” pendant ceiling light. “The shapes are whimsical and blend well in very contemporary or very traditional settings.”

Sidewalk Sale

They say one man’s trash is another’s treasure; O’Shaughnessy rescued this pair of metal
planters from the curb while on a morning walk.

Smokescreen

This vintage metal fireplace screen from the early 1900s with an ornate Oriental motif was discovered at Treasures, an antiques shop in Old Lyme.
