R5 Hot Plates | July 1, 2008

Half Moon, the new, super-casual Hudson-side restaurant opened by the folks behind Harvest-on-Hudson, is setting the tone for summer with a down-home menu, cold beer and sangria and fabulous outdoor dining. For starters, we can’t get enough of Half Moon’s blistered shishito peppers ($5). These plancha-seared, one-bite wonders offer the perfect alternative to greasy bar bites, arriving heaped in a mound, gritty with coarse salt, and perfect for compulsive munching between sips of beer. For mains, we’re loving Half Moon’s Yankee nod to an old New Orleans standard. Their Ipswich Po’ Boy ($13) substitutes tender, briny Ipswich belly clams for the Creole sandwich’s deep fried oysters. The sweet, greaseless, and juicy deep-fried clams in Half Moon’s version are piled into a long wedge and served alongside a pickle-y, tangy remoulade; crunchy, freshly-made cole slaw and a heap of true shoestring fries. This vacation-in-a-roll (and those snappably-crisp, perfectly-salted fries) are just what we’re looking for on a hot summer night.
