Fans of Toyo, Mamaroneck’s urbane little sushi bar, can now pick from a continent of new flavors. Next door’s Red Plum, a chic pan-Asian by the same team, offers Korean kimchee, Vietnamese summer rolls, Japanese sushi and Indian pancakes—all slung next to a dramatic water wall and a luminously glowing stone bar. On our last visit, we passed over the Chinese General Tso’s chicken for a deep-fried paillards of panko-crusted chicken sitting in a pool of sweet Thai curry. Crispy and sugary, and studded with coconut shreds, this $9 lunch comes with a cone of jasmine rice, crisp mesclun salad and a cup of Toyo’s refreshing miso soup.
