R5 Fran Sperling’s Aerial Yoga Classes

It’s a real stretch.

We often get a sense of floating after a particularly good work-out, but it’s pretty much guarante-ed with the new aerial yoga classes taught by instructor Fran Sperling (who is also an acrobat) and offered at Riverstone Yoga (2 Hudson View Way, Tarrytown 914-332-9642; riverstoneyoga.com). Silk hammocks hang to waist level and offer support for traditional yoga poses, allowing you to stretch deeper while seemingly floating between the hammock and the floor.

“Our yoga hammocks help teach students of any level of ability how to align their bodies within a variety of yoga postures as well as experiencing inversions without any compression on the spine,” says Riverstone Yoga owner Patricia Fischer Donohue. “It’s not often that you get to be upside down and relaxed at the same time. Your back, shoulders, and hips feel the difference right away. Another great side benefit is that you get a natural facelift when you go upside down!” Riverstone offers two types of aerial experiences: a traditional class for strength and flexibility and a gentler restorative class. Contact Riverstone Yoga for more information and to reserve your spot—space is limited.
